Homes evacuated as flooding hits Dopemu district of Lagos, Nigeria.

Many residents of the Dopemu district of Lagos have been forced to flee their homes after a flash flood on Saturday 10 February 2017. The area around Irepodon Street was flooded following a sudden downpour at about 5.00 am local time, with residents of neighbouring areas rushing to help evacuate the children of the effected residents. There are no reports of any casualties following this event, but it is likely that considerable damage will have occurred to homes and businesses hit by the flood.

Lagos has a tropical climate with district wet and dry seasons. Dopemu has suffered a number of flooding events in recent rainy seasons, which typically last from April to October, and local authorities are currently carrying out improvement works on the areas storm drain system. Unfortunately the unexpected February downpour appears to have caught them by surprise, with water being prevented from flowing into a culvert by a barrier erected to protect workers in the system, resulting in flooding of neighbouring properties.
