Earthquakes are rare in Nebraska, and those that do occur are generally associated with the Humboldt Fault, which runs through the southeast of the state. However the 18 June 2015 event occurred far from this, and is unlikely to have been directly connected with it. The geology of the state is also subject to pressures from uplift in the Rocky Mountains to the west, caused by subduction along the western American seaboard.
