Forty seven people have been confirmed dead and another fifteen are missing after a series of landslides and flash floods in Central Java, Indonesia, this week. Landslides
are a common problem after severe weather events, as excess pore water
pressure can overcome cohesion in soil and sediments, allowing them to
flow like liquids. Approximately 90% of all landslides are caused by
heavy rainfall.

Landslides
are a common problem in Java, particularly in the rainy season, which
lasts from October till April, and can result in an annual rainfall in
excess of 2000 mm in parts of Central Java.
