Part of the Houston Ship Cannal has been closed after an oil tanker struck a submerged object, slightly after midnight on Tuesday 6 September 2016, tearing a hole in its hull, resulting in a fuel leak, which was then somehow ignited. The 250 m long Aframax River is thought to have hit a submerged sewage pipeline, triggering the incident. No cargo oil was onboard the vessel at the time of the incident, only the ship's fuel was ignited, but that was enough to cause flames rising 60 m into the air and cause extensive to the vessel, though nobody was hurt in the incident.

About 1.6 km of the cannal was closed, south of the Battleship Texas, while vessels from the Coast Guard Station Houston and Station Galveston, Port of Houston Authority and Harris County Sheriff's Office tackled the blaze, and the Lynchburg Ferry has been forced to suspenf opperations.
