Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake on the coast of Tanzania.

The United States Geological Survey recorded a Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake at a depth of 10 km, on the coast of Tanzania, roughly 200 km to the south of Dar es Salaam, slightly after 8.10 pm local time (slightly after 5.10 pm GMT) on Tuesday 20 January 2026. There are no reports of any damage or casualties associated with this event, although it is likely to have been felt locally.

The western Tanzania lies within the the of the Great Rift Valley, which is slowly splitting the African Plate in two along a line from the Red Sea through Ethiopia, and which includes the great lakes and volcanoes of east-central Africa. This has the potential to open into a new ocean over the next few tens of millions of years, splitting Africa into two new, smaller, continents; Nubia to the west and Somalia to the east.

To the southeast, the island of Madagascar has been moving away from Africa since the Jurassic, forming a series of spreading centres across the Mozambique Channel, which both continue to push the island to the east and exert pressure on the southeastern coast of Africa, contributing to Earthquake activity in the region.

Four fishermen killed by Hippopotamuses by Lake Naivasha, Kenya.

Four members of a group of ten fishermen have been killed after being attacked by Hippopotamuses by Lake Naivasha in Kenya on Friday 2 January 2025. The group, who have been described as local youths, approached the lake after dark as they lacked fishing permits, and are thought to have disturbed a group of Hippos with calves. Six of the party were able to escape by entering the water and swimming, or by climbing trees. One of the deceased is described as having initially escaped, but to have returned in an attempt to rescue a friend.

Lake Naivasha is noted for undergoing marked variations in its depth, and therefore extent. Water levels in the lake dropped continuously during the first half of the twentieth century, falling to 60 cm in 1945, then rose steadily for over two decades, reaching 6 m in 1968. The waters then fell until 1987, when the lake was only 2.25 m deep, but have been trending upwards since this time, causing the land to expand, swamping low lying villages and farmland, something which has accelerated in recent years as warming global temperatures have led to increased rainfall in East Africa.

One upshot of this that the lake naturally contains no commercially harvestable fish, probably as a result of drying up on occasions in the past. Non-native fish have been introduced to the lake in order to create a commercial fishery, but this has proven difficult to manage, with a dramatic fish-population crash fuelled by overfishing in 2001 leading to the introduction of strict fishing regulations on the lake.

This has created in a fish stock available to commercial fishing companies, and foreign tourists, but not to local villagers, resulting in frequent attempts to circumnavigate the regulations, for example by fishing at night. This has become more of a problem as the lake has expanded, swallowing up farmland and leaving the local population looking for other sources of sustenance. The expansion of the commercial flower growing industry, which earns the nation hard currency but also takes up farmland in the Rift Valley around lakes such as Naivasha and employs a relatively low number of people, has also tended to push people towards illicit economic activities such as night fishing, as well as fuelling conflict between Humans and aquatic wildlife such as Hippopotamuses and Crocodiles.

While Hippos can appear benign to people unfamiliar to them, they are generally considered to be one of the most dangerous Animals in Africa, and probably the world. Hippopotamuses are the largest land Mammals after Elephants and Rhinoceroses, as well as being the closest terrestrial relatives of Whales. Adult Hippos typically weigh about 1.4 tonnes (males tend to be slightly larger than females, but this is marginal, and the sex of Hippos can be hard to differentiate). Hippos can open their mouths to almost 110°, and their jaws are highly muscled, allowing them to slap there mouths shut abruptly, driving canine and incisor teeth that can be 50 cm long into anything which offends them. This weapon is primarily used in intraspecific fights particularly between the males, which are highly territorial. However, they are also notoriously aggressive towards other species, particularly Humans, possibly as a result as having evolved alongside Pliocene and Pleistocene hunting Hominids. Hippopotamuses tend to stay in the water during the day, lowering the threat they present to Humans, but come out of the water to graze at night, when they are generally considered to be at their most dangerous.

Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake in the Singida Region of central Tanzania.

The United States Geological Survey recorded a Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake at a depth of 10 km, roughly 39 km to the southeast of the town of Ikungi in the Singida Region of northern Tanzania, slightly after 6.40 pm local time (slightly after 3.40 pm GMT) on Wednesday 6 September 2023. There are no reports of any damage or casualties associated with this event (nor would any be expected with an event of this size), but people have reported feeling it locally.

Magnitude 4.4 Earthquake shakes Johannesburg, South Africa

The South African Council for Geosciences recorded a Magnitude 4.4 Earthquake beneath the city of Boksburg, East Rand urban conurbation of Gauteng Province, South Africa, slightly before 2.40 am local time (slightly before 0.40 am GMT) on Sunday 11 June 2023. There are no reports of any damage or casualties associated with this event, though many people reported feeling it between Pretoria, Kimberley, and the Eswatini border.

Earthquakes of any size are relatively rare in South Africa and because of this rarity it is hard to make precise judgements about the cause of quakes in South Africa, due to a paucity of data. Northwestern South Africa is close the southern end of the Great Rift Valley exits the continent and passes out under the Indian Ocean on the coast of Mozambique. The Great Rift Valley is slowly splitting the African Plate in two allow a line from the Red Sea through Ethiopia, and which includes the great lakes and volcanoes of east-central Africa. This has the potential to open into a new ocean over the next few tens of millions of years, splitting Africa into two new, smaller, continents; Nubia to the west and Somalia to the east.

Earthquakes can also sometimes be triggered by mining activity, and settling movements at old mine sites, and the location of the Boksburg mine is close to the East Rand Proprietary Mine, from which gold was excavated between its founding in 1893 and closure in 2008. A Magnitude 4.4 event would be exceptionally large for a mine-related Earthquake, but the East Rand Mine is no ordinary mine site, it was once the deepest mine in South Africa (and therefore the deepest mine in the world, the world's six deepest mines all being in South Africa). The East Rand Mine reached a depth of 3.585 km by the time it closed, a depth which has been surpassed only by four other mines; the Savuku Gold Mine in Carletonville, Gauteng Province, which reached 3.7 km in depth by the time of its closure in 2017; the TauTona Mine, also in Carletonville, which reached 3.9 km deep by the time it closed in 2018, and the Mponeng Gold Mine, in Mponeng, Gauteng Province, which is 4.0 km deep and still active.

Magnitude 4.6 Earthquake in South Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.

The United States Geological Survey Recorded a Magnitude 4.6 Earthquake at a depth of 10.0 km about 91 km to the west of the city of Uvira in South Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo, slightly after 1.30 pm local time (slightly after 11.30 am GMT) on Wednesday 24 March 2021. There are no reports of any damage or casualties associated with this event at this time, but is likely to have been felt locally.

South Kivu lies within the the of the Great Rift Valley, which is slowly splitting the African Plate in two along a line from the Red Sea through Ethiopia, and which includes the great lakes and volcanoes of east-central Africa. Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake in Northern Province, Zambia.

The United States Geological Survey recorded a Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake at a depth of 10 km roughly 5 km to the southwest of the town of Mbala in Northern Province, Zambia, slightly after 6.45 am local time (slightly after 4.45 am GMT) on Thursday 21 January 2021. A quake of this size is not normally large enough to present any threat to Human life or property, but may have been felt locally.

Earthquakes are rare in Southern Africa, making this one of the largest Earthquakes ever recorded in the country. Because of this rarity it is hard to make precise judgements about the cause of quakes in the region, due to a paucity of data. Botswana is close the southern end of the Great Rift Valley exits the continent and passes out under the Indian Ocean. The Great Rift Valley is slowly splitting the African Plate in two allow a line from the Red Sea through Ethiopia, and which includes the great lakes and volcanoes of east-central Africa.
