Eruption triggers partial crater collapse and pyroclastic flow on Mount Stromboli, Italy.

An eruption on Mount Stromboli, a volcanic island off the coast of Italy, has caused part of the volcano's crater to collapse, triggering a pyroclastic flow (avalanche of hot ash and gas) which reached the sea, triggering a phreatic explosion (explosion caused by superheated volcanic material coming into contact with water). The incident, which caused no injuries or damage to property, happened slightly after 9.20 am local time on Sunday 9 October 2022, and was part of a cycle of volcanic activity which began on Thursday 29 September.

Stromboli has been in more-or-less constant eruption since at least Roman times, and is thought to be about 5000 years old, though it is not generally considered dangerous if not approached closely; there are three settlements on the island, all less than three kilometres from the summit. Stromboli is noted for frequent small explosive eruptions, which through lava bombs, ash and incandescent rock fragments out of the crater, a type of eruption known by vulcanologists around the world as 'strombolian'. The summit rises 924 m above sea level.

Southeastern Italy lies on the edge of the Eurasian Plate, close to its margin with Africa. The African Plate is being subducted beneath Italy on along a margin that cuts through the island of Sicily. The African plate is being subducted beneath Italy, and as it sinks is melted by the friction and heat of the Earth's interior. Some of the melted material then rises through the overlying plate fuelling the volcanoes of southern Italy.

Eruption on Mount Stromboli, Italy.

The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported an eruption on Mount Stromboli, a volcanic island off the east coast of southern Italy, to the north of Sicily, slightly after 10.15 am local time on Monday 16 November 2020. The eruption produced an ash column that rose about a kilometre above the volcano (unusually large for Stromboli), as well as a pyroclastic flow. Nobody was hurt by this event, but people in the area have reported falls of ash and pumice.

Eruption on Mount Stromboli.

The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported a significant eruption on Mount Stromboli, a volcanic island off the east coast of southern Italy, to the north of Sicily, on Wednesday 28 August 2019, the second large event on the island this summer. The volcano produced a plume of ash and several streams of lava which flowed down the flanks of the volcano, reaching the sea. Nobody was hurt by this event, but several tourists were forced to flee beaches in the paths of the lava and a number of small fires were started.

Tourist killed by eruption on Stromboli, Italy.

A tourist has died and another has been injured following an eruption on Stromboli, a volcanic island off the east coast of southern Italy, to the north of Sicily. The tourists were hiking on the mountain on Wednesday 3 July 2019, when the volcano erupted suddenly, producing an ash cloud that swept down towards the village of Ginostra, which has now been evacuated. as well as lava flows on the side of the mountain. The tourist were apparently hit by fragments of rock thrown from the volcano's crater. Such eruptions are extremely unusual on Stromboli, with the last happening in 2007. This is despite the volcano being arguably the most active in Europe, producing many small eruptions each day, typically in the form of small lava fountains that do not leave the crater and which are a popular tourist attraction, such constant small eruptions are known as 'Stombolian' eruptions when encountered on other volcanoes.

Volcanic activity on Mount Stromboli.

The l'Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia has reported a lava flow on the northern flank of Stromboli, an island volcano off the west coast of southern Italy, slightly over 200 km southeast of Naples, on Friday 15 December 2017, apparently coming from the volcano's north-eastern crater, which has been producing fountains of lava since the beginning of the month. Access to the volcano's higher slopes have been shut off as a precaution.

Eruptions on Stromboli.

The volcano has been fairly quiet since June this year (2012), but activity increased sharply in November. On the fifth five active vents were visible on the crater terrace, with one in the southwest crater producing lava fountains with durations in excess of a minute long and two craters in the central crater also producing lava fountains, with interludes of between five minutes and an hour. On 21 November activity resumed, with lava fountains from two vents on the northern and central parts of the terrace.
