Teenaged girl killed by landslide in Tanahun District, Nepal.

A thirteen-year-old girl was killed by a landslide at Gurdungbaga Tole in the Tanahun District of Nepal on the evening of Monday 30 June 2014. Amrita Shrestha was preparing a meal in the kitchen of her home when the building was struck by the landslide. Other members of her family reportedly escaped unharmed.

The incident reportedly occurred after an extended period of heavy rainfall. Landslides are a common problem after severe weather events, as excess pore water pressure can overcome cohesion in soil and sediments, allowing them to flow like liquids. Approximately 90% of all landslides are caused by heavy rainfall. The end of June typically marks the onset of the monsoon season in Tanahun District, the most vulnerable time of the year for landslides.
