Three dead following West Java pipeline explosion.

Three people have died and several more have been injured after a fuel pipeline exploded in the Subang  Regency of West Java, Indonesia, on Thursday 28 August 2014. The explosion occurred on one of the main distribution pipelines of the Indonesian state-owned company Pertamina, and led to a fire that rapidly spread to a number of nearby houses, where the casualties occurred. It is understood that two of the deceased were children.

The affected pipeline carried fuel from the Balongan refinery to the Indonesian capital Jakarta, and its closure potentially threatens supplies of fuel to the city, though it is hoped that tankers can be used to ship fuel by sea until the pipeline is repaired. An inquiry into the cause of the explosion has yet to take place, though it is suspected that it may have resulted from an attempt to steal fuel from the pipeline. Pertamina have agreed to pay for the medical treatment of those injured in the blast, as well as compensation to the families of those that have died.
