Worker killed by exploding tyre at Queensland coal mine.

A 21-year-old man has been killed and a second worker severely injured after a tyre on a truck exploded at the Dawson Coal Mine, an open pit mine near Moura in Queensland, Australia, at about 4.30 am local time on Monday 16 February 2015. The injured man was initially taken by ambulance to the Theodore Hospital with fractures to the shoulder and collarbone, then airlifted to a hospital in Brisbane. Mine operators Anglo American have closed the operation pending an investigation, and workers are being offered counseling.

Anglo American have expressed sympathy for the event, and stated that it is too early to comment upon the cause of the incident, however a spokesman for the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union has issued a statement highly critical of the company, pointing out that this is the third worker to die at an Anglo American mine within a year, and that four previous deaths at Australian mines (not all operated by Anglo American) have been attributed to tyre bursts since 1996.
