Bison which killed woman in South Dakota to be relocated.

A Bison which killed a 70-year-old Canadian woman in Custer State Park, South Dakota, is to be relocated to another area. The incident happened on 18 May, when the woman and her husband encountered a group of five Bison bulls on the Grace Coolidge Trail, which runs through the park. At this time the bulls were about 500 m ahead of the couple, who allowed them to move off before following. A little while later the couple encountered the Bison again, though this time they were only about 15 m away. The couple waited for them to move before starting to follow, but this time moved while the Animals were still in site, causing one of the bulls to turn and charge.

The initial charge resulted in the woman being thrown about two metres in the air, sustaining serious injuries to the leg and abdomen. The Bison then stood over the injured woman for about 15 minutes while her husband hid behind a tree and called the local sheriff's office. During this time the woman remained conscious, and was able to talk to her husband. The bull eventually wandered off, after which the husband approached the woman, but this caused the Animal to turn and charge again, this time throwing her about three meters into the air and causing fatal injuries. After this the Bison walked off, and the husband attempted to perform CPR, being joined shortly after by first aid-trained park staff, but it was impossible to save her. The death was the first Bison-related fatality in the park for 21 years.

Following the incident, rumours began to circulate that the park authorities planned to euthanize the Bison, leading to a public outcry, and many people contacting the South Dakota Governor’s Office, the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks and Custer State Park, asking for the Animal to be spared. On Wednesday 10 June the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Game, Fish and Parks announced that they were willing to rehome the bull and take care of its welfare. 

Bison are large animals, the American Bison can reach 1.8 m in length and weigh around 900 kg, and have notoriously unpredictable tempers, often appearing placid and indifferent to their surroundings, and then charging without warning. They can reach speeds of 35 km per hour, and both sexes have horns, which can make unexpected charging highly dangerous.

North America is thought to have been home to about 50 million Bison at the beginning of the nineteenth century, a number that fell to less than a thousand individuals by the middle of the twentieth century due to over-hunting, not just for the purpose of food, but as part of a conscious effort to change the landscape from one amenable to traditional, Native American, lifestyles to a landscape suitable to European-style farming. However since the mid-twentieth century conservation efforts and breeding programs have reversed this decline, with the population now about 530 000 across the continent, including around 40 000 in South Dakota.

Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake in Guerrero State, Mexico.

The United States Geological Survey recorded a Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake at a depth of 35.0 km, approximately 4 km to the north of the resort of Rancho Viejo in Guerrero State, slightly before 10.00 am local time (slightly before 2.00 pm GMT) on Friday 2 January 2025. This even was felt across much of southern and central Mexico, with at least two people having died, a 50-year-old woman in Guerrero State, and a 60-year-old man in Mexico City. At least 12 further people were injured by the event.

Mexico is located on the southernmost part of the North American Plate. To the south, along the Middle American Trench, which lies off the southern coast off Mexico, the Cocos Plate is being subducted under the North American Plate, passing under southern Mexico as it sinks into the Earth. Guatemala is located on the southern part of the Caribbean Plate, close to its boundary with the Cocos Plate, which underlies part of the east Pacific. The Cocos Plate is being pushed northwards by expansion of the crust along the East Pacific Rise, and is subducted beneath the Caribbean Plate along the Middle American Trench. This is not a smooth process, and the plates frequently stick together then break apart as the pressure builds up, causing Earthquakes in the process.

The Cocos Plate is thought to have formed about 23 million years ago, when the Farallon Plate, an ancient tectonic plate underlying the East Pacific, split in two, forming the Cocos Plate to the north and the Nazca Plate to the south. Then, roughly 10 million years ago, the northwesternmost part of the Cocos Plate split of to form the Rivera Plate, south of Beja California.

In a paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, in 2012, a team led by Igor Stubailo of the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of California Los Angeles, published a model of the subduction zone beneath Mexico using data from seismic monitoring stations belonging to the Mesoamerican Seismic Experiment, the Network of Autonomously Recording Seismographs, the USArray, Mapping the Rivera Subduction Zone, and the Mexican Servicio Sismologico Nacional.

The seismic monitoring stations were able to monitor not just Earthquakes in Mexico, but also Earthquakes in other parts of the world, monitoring the rate at which compression waves from these quakes moved through the rocks beneath Mexico, and how the structure of the rocks altered the movement of these waves.

Based upon the results from these monitoring stations, Stubailo et al. came to the conclusion that the Cocos Plate was split into two beneath Mexico, and that the two plates are subducting at different angles, one steep and one shallow. Since the rate at which a plate melts reflects its depth within the Earth, the steeper angled plate melts much closer to the subduction zone than the shallower angled plate, splitting the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt into sections above the different segments of the Cocos Plate, and causing it to apparently curve away from the subduction zone.

Three dead as California hit by a series of storms over Christmas period.

Three people have died and many others have been affected by flooding as California has been hit by a series of storms over the Christmas period. A 74-year-old man from Redding, in Shasta County, died on the weekend of 20-21 December 2025, after his car became trapped in floodwaters, despite efforts by local police officers to rescue him. On Monday 22 December a woman in her 70s died after being swept into the sea by a large wave at MacKerricher State Park in Mendocino County. On Wednesday 24 December a 64-year-old man from San Diego was struck by a falling tree.

Many areas have been affected by flooding, with some communities in San Bernadino County facing evacuation orders in order to keep them safe. Several flash floods have been reported in Los Angeles County, where 27 cm of rainfall was recorded on Wednesday 24 December, with a large landslip reported in Altadena, on a slope which had been stripped of vegetation by wildfires in January this year. Around 130 households were evacuated due to concerns about flooding and landslides in Los Angeles, mostly in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood, which was also hit by wildfires in January. Windspeeds gusting in excess of 100 km per hour have been recorded in San Francisco, where waves more than 7 m high have been reported. More than 100 000 people have been left without power due to the storms, mostly in the central part of the state.

The storms have been driven by a phenomenon called an atmospheric river, in which a narrow band of saturated air carries large volumes of moisture for long distances. Such streams typically originate in tropical regions, and typically travel along the boundaries between diverging weather systems. As with other storm systems, once they pass over land they lose momentum, and can be forced upwards by hills or mountains, causing them to cool and deposit their moisture as precipitation, causing high rainfall and often flooding.

Atmospheric rivers are a common phenomenon on the west coast of the United States, and a significant driver of local weather conditions. However, these systems are becoming both more common and more severe as a result of the warming climate, which has led to rising temperatures over the tropical Pacific, and subsequently higher levels of atmospheric moisture, combined with a tendency form storm systems and other weather events to form and move much more quickly, making it harder for meteorologists to make long term predictions about where and when such storms will hit.

United Nations recognises three conservation projects as new World Restoration Flagships.

The United Nations has recognised three conservation projects as World Restoration Flagships, according to a press release issued by the United Nations Environment Program on 4 December 2025. World Restoration Flagships are projects intended to have large-scale and long-term impacts, held up as examples which embody the 10 Restoration Principles of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030). World Restoration Flagships already cover an area of over 10 million km², an area larger than China.

The first new project recognised is the Shellfish Reef Building Program in Australia. This project, a partnership between the Nature Conservancy and the Australian Government, aims to restore reefs of Oysters and Mussels which were once found around much of the southern coast of Australia but which have been greatly depleted by over-harvesting, sedimentation and pollution.

Since its inception in 2020, the Reef Builder Program has worked with local communities to restore reefs at thirteen locations along the southern coastline of Australia; it aims to restore 30% of Australia's original shellfish reefs by 2030. The project has generated over 425 jobs, and about US$10 million in income for over 50 small and medium sized businesses, as well as helping local communities to reconnect to nature and promote stewardship over the natural environment.

The second project recognised is the Respectful Returns Initiative in Canada, a partnership between Parks Canada and local and Indigenous communities, which aims to restore damaged rivers and streams in seven national parks along Canada’s Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

Since its initiation in 2010, the Respectful Returns Initiative has restored over 650 km² of land and 228 km of waterways, created over 100 jobs, supported research projects by three universities, and formed partnerships with 32 local organisations and community groups. The Salmon population has increased at six of the seven locations where the Initiative works. The Initiative aims to both protect Salmon and to strengthen the connection between the population and their environment. 

The third project recognised is the Thicket Restoration Movement in South Africa, a collaboration uniting over 60 initiatives in Eastern and Western Cape provinces, which aims to restore over 8000 km² of indigenous subtropical thicket by 2030.

These thickets serve as a grazing resource for both wild Mammals and livestock, particularly under drought conditions, which is an important consideration following the drought of 2023/4, which is the worst the region has suffered in over 100 years. It is a particularly important resource for threatened species such as Black Rhinoceros and African Bush Elephant, and is also a significant carbon reserve, with soils covered by thicket retaining notably more carbon than exposed soils. It is estimated that restoring these thickets sequesters around eight million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. The project is also predicted to directly create over 1000 jobs in rural communities, as well as improving the lives of around two million people.

Magnitude 6.8 Earthquake beneath the Hubbard Glacier on the border between Alaska and Canada's Yukon Territory.

The Alaska Earthquake Centre recorded a Magnitude 6.8 Earthquake at a depth of 3 km, beneath the Hubbard Glacier on the border between Alaska and Canada's Yukon Territory, slightly after 11.40 am Alaskan Standard Time (slightly before 8.40 pm GMT) on Saturday 6 December 2025. Earthquakes Canada recorded the same event as a Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake at a depth of 10 km. There are no reports of any damage or casualties associated with this event, but people have reported feeling it over a wide area of eastern Alaska, the Yukon, British Colombia, and parts of Washington State.

Alaska lies on the North American Plate, with the Pacific Plate underlying the ocean to the south. The Aleutian Trench runs along much of the south coast of Alaska, with the Pacific Plate being subducted beneath this and passing under Alaska as it sinks into the Earth. Off the coast of southeast Alaska the Pacific and North American Plates pass one-another horizontally, with the Pacific Plate moving northward and the North American to the south (a transform plate margin). This is not a smooth process, and the plates frequently stick together, then break apart as the pressure builds up, causing Earthquakes.
